If you pause the parts where you see the Balrog in his entirety, you actually notice that Peter Jackson and his crew actually tried to make the creature as faithful as the books as possible. Although there is no mention of horns or wings, or being that big, the Balrog is always described as a human shape form inside a shadow. If you see, every time the creature appears is not revealed completly, it always has smoke and darkness around him, and in the center you see its form, more dark than anything else. Only when it shakes you notice its body, but if the thing keeps still or doesn't move much, like in 1:27, you see that is constantly hidden behind its own smoke.
